The first was ’Western Spaghetti’ which I made in 2008, the second was ’Fresh Guacamole’ in 2012, which, at 1 minute 40 seconds, became the shortest film ever to be nominated for an Oscar. “[The main creative challenge was] coming up with enough good ideas to make the project worth shooting. Casting the role of the objects (for instance, what will play the role of the ’onion rings’) was a year-long process that continued up to the moment I shot the film. I never stop questioning my choices. I’m always looking for a simpler, better way of doing things. “Shooting took seven weeks, one shot per day. Those are my own hands animated in the film, so stamina was a biggie. That, and the fact that I could not rent a deli (cost-prohibitive and impossible due to the long hours required to animate) so I just had to buy one instead. Finding every piece individually and getting all the vintage deli equipment from all over the world was quite a challenge (thank you, eBay). There is not a single ’fake’ prop in the film; it’s all real stuff. The centerpiece is, of course, the one-of-a-kind 1920’s deli case, a porcelain enamel beauty originally from New York City which I found hiding out in Atlanta, Georgia and had freighted to Los Angeles for the filming. “Does anyone need a deli?“ Schedule: “We ran a Kickstarter to raise completion funds July 14 – August 14, 2014. Pre-production began August 15, shooting started September 10, and ended in early November. Post-production: November through December 7.
