Dutch expert explains implications of far-right victory in Netherlands election | LBC

Editor of , Robin Pascoe discusses what the country’s shift to the far-right means as far-right populist Geert Wilders and his Freedom Party (PVV) secure election success. The PVV won 37 of 150 seats in a shock victory which ’exceeded all expectations’ as they more than doubled its share since. theprevious elections in 2021. Mr Wilders is known for an aggressive anti-Islamic and anti-immigration rhetoric. Under the Dutch system, no one party is able to win enough of the 150 seats to govern on its own, meaning Mr Wilders will need to form a coalition. None of the parties he could form a government with shares his anti-European Union ideas, with all three of the other top parties previously ruling out serving in a PVV-led coalition. Mr Wilders has declared he aims to be Prime Minister, as he expressed his support for a referendum on whether the Netherlands should leave the European Union. However, he has stated that his first priority is ’significant restriction on asylum and immigration’.
