Wide of memorial to Nemtsov STORYLINE: People laid flowers in central Moscow on Tuesday to mark the ninth anniversary of the killing of Boris Nemtsov, a charismatic Russian opposition figure. Once deputy prime minister under Boris Yeltsin, Nemtsov was a popular politician and harsh critic of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. On a cold February night in 2015, he was gunned down by assailants on a bridge adjacent to the Kremlin as he walked with his girlfriend in a death that shocked the country. A makeshift memorial on the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge where Nemtsov was slain still draws mourners each year who leave bouquets of flowers. His death was a blow to the political opposition, as was the death in prison this month of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. An officer in the security forces of Kremlin-backed Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov was sentenced to 20 years for firing the shots that killed Nemtsov. Four other men were sentenced to 11 to 19 years for their involvement.
