“Nemtsov, for me personally, is an example of such a politician, of whom there should have been more in our country, and the development of our country would have gone in a completely different direction if there had been more such people.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Anna (no surname given), Moscow resident:
“In fact, I became interested in politics not so long ago, but when I became interested, I realized that there is a lot of lawlessness going on in Russia, a lot of police violence, corruption. And I realized that every person who fights for the rights of all Russians, all of us, tries to change something, is very valuable. And I think it’s terrible that people can just be killed on the street with the cameras ‘accidentally’ turned off. I think this should not be forgotten.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Andrei (no surname given), Moscow resident:
“I consider murder the most vile event in general, when one person kills another person out of some of his prejudices. ‘Thou shalt not kill’ for me is the highest commandment that people received from God.”

STORYLINE:
People laid flowers in central Moscow on Tuesday to mark the ninth anniversary of the killing of Boris Nemtsov, a charismatic Russian opposition figure.
Once deputy prime minister under Boris Yeltsin, Nemtsov was a popular politician and harsh critic of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
On a cold February night in 2015, he was gunned down by assailants on a bridge adjacent to the Kremlin as he walked with his girlfriend in a death that shocked the country.
A makeshift memorial on the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge where Nemtsov was slain still draws mourners each year who leave bouquets of flowers.
His death was a blow to the political opposition, as was the death in prison this month of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
An officer in the security forces of Kremlin-backed Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov was sentenced to 20 years for firing the shots that killed Nemtsov.
Four other men were sentenced to 11 to 19 years for their involvement. However, Nemtsov’s allies said that was an attempt to shift blame from the government.
