Aikido parries, HARAI, against strikes, TSUKI, by Stefan Stenudd in 2010
Aikido blocks (HARAI, also spelled BARAI) by Stefan Stenudd on the striking attacks chudan tsuki (to the belly), jodan tsuki (to the face), and mawashi tsuki (roundhouse). In aikido, the blocks are not meant to stop the oncoming strikes, but to lead them on forward. So, they should rather be called parries.
Therefore they have to be preceded by the evasive taisabaki movement, towards the side of the attacker. Immediately after this entering move, the aikido technique commences. But on this video, only the start is shown – except for the ending kotegaeshi against jodan tsuki.
The attacker is Tony Johansson, and Mattias Enguis held the camera. Recorded in 2010.
This is a new edit of the video posted in 2010:
The quality is improved in the edit, but still far below the level of contemporary videos. I did what I could.
