@lukepallas During Francesco’s stay in Gubbio, a terrible and ferocious wolf appeared in the surrounding countryside, devouring all the animals. The inhabitants of the Umbrian city were terrified, and no one dared to leave the town. They decided to begin hunting the wolf. Saint Francis, feeling compassion for the people, decided to go and meet the wolf.
When he encountered it, the beast approached menacingly with its mouth wide open. Saint Francis calmly approached, calling it “Brother Wolf“ and ordered it in the name of Christ to not harm anyone. Miraculously, the fierce wolf stopped, then approached gently and crouched at the feet of the Saint.
Francis then added that it was time to make peace with the people. If the wolf agreed not to harm men or other animals, he would ensure that the people would feed it for the rest of its life. The wolf promised by bowing its head and then lifted its paw, placing it in the hand of Saint Francis. The Saint then ordered the wolf to follow him without fear.
Francis and the wolf entered Gubbio under the astonished gaze of the townspeople. In the great marketplace (which still exists today), the Saint spoke of the wolf’s promise. In front of all the people, at Saint Francis’ request, the wolf lifted its right paw and placed it on the Saint’s hand. Following this, everyone began to praise and bless the Lord.
The wolf lived for a few more years, generously fed by the people. It died of old age. The citizens mourned greatly because, seeing it peacefully roaming the city, they were reminded of the virtue and holiness of Saint Francis.
In Gubbio, you can visit the Church of San Francesco della Pace, which tradition holds was built on the site where the wolf lived.
