Burle Marx: 5. Folias de Guaratiba (Violeiros de Guaratiba)

This final movement of Burle Marx’s suite “Violeiros de Guaratiba,“ is a joyful and spirited dance, first in the minor key, then exuberantly, in a related major key. (It is subtitled Frevo--music associated with the carnival in Recife, Brazil). He intersperses material from the 4th movement unexpectedly, re-introducing the thrumming bass note as if a drum, with evocative chords overlaid, before returning to the initial material. This is a fitting musical conclusion to the suite, as fun to play as it is to listen to.
