Peveril Castle: One of England’s Earliest Norman Forts - Castleton, Peak District, Derbyshire, UK

The imposing ruins of Peveril Castle stand high above the pretty village of Castleton in the heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District. Mentioned in the Domesday survey, Peveril Castle is one of England’s earliest Norman fortresses. The keep was built by Henry II in 1176. There is a short climb up to this hilltop castle but once up there you enjoy the breathtaking views over the Hope Valley and Castleton. Explore the remains of the keep including the garderobe. Displays in the visitor centre tell the story of Peveril as the administrative focus of the Royal Forest of the Peak, a royal hunting preserve since the 11th century. Peveril Castle stands on a limestone outcrop in the midst of an ancient landscape. 2 km to the west, is Mam Tor, a Bronze Age hill fort, and 2 miles (3 km) to the east at Brough-on-Noe is the Roman fort of Navio.
