Javagal Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple - Unexplored Hoysala Temples of Karnataka | Steps Together

Javagal Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple is one among the hundreds of Hoysala temples of Karnataka which is largely unexplored by tourists and ignored by the government. While Chennakesava Temple at Belur and Hoysaleswara temple at Halebidu are well known for their unmatchable architecture equally beautiful Hoysala temple at Javagal gets much less popularity even though its proximity to the famous tourist spot Chikmagalur. Javagal is 215 km from Bengaluru 59 km from Tiptur 12 km from Halebeedu 38 km from Chikmagalur The first thing that comes to our mind when one hears the name Javagal is former Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath. Even though Srinath was raised in Mysore, this is the village from where his family originally hails. The small village of Javagal was once famous for its commerce activities during the reign of a Hoysala King named Vira Someshwara. The Lakshminarasimha temple at Javagal is an example of the mid-13th century Hoysala architecture. Unlike other Hoysala temples, this Lakshminarasimha Temple of Javagal doesn’t have elephant balustrades (parapets) on either side of the steps leading to the temple. Instead, there are 2 of them outside the entrance to the whole complex. Hoysalas ruled the southern Deccan from 1026 to 1343 AD. King Vira Someshwara was the 9th of the 12 kings of the Hoysala dynasty that ruled. This 770 years old temple was built in 1250 A.D. by the Hoysala Empire King Vira Someshwara. Entry to the temple is through a Mahadwara i.e. a high compound wall that was built during the Vijayanagar era. The main deity of this temple is Vishnu in the form of Sridhara. Sridhara means ‘consort of Lakshmi’. It is a trikuta temple i.e., it has three shrines of the usual type built on an elevated platform. The central shrine which houses Vishnu as Sridhara has a shikhara (tower) other two shrines have Venugopala and Lakshminarasimha.
