If you’re the kind of purist who wants a classic that poses well for judges AND kicks asphalt in the quarter, check out this ’inFLAMEous’ Plymouth!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Strung into a stretched street rod in the late ’90s, this Plymouth really didn’t hit its stride until under the care of its current owner. With the help of Impatient Creations, $150K worth of build money and a documented $68K in parts, the car was transformed from a cool project into a national headliner. A big reason for that headlining status is a largely original profile that was bathed in Chrysler Intense Blue Pearlcoat, licked with brilliant flames, detailed with airbrushed shadows and stamped with seven era-specific MoPar logos. Naturally, all of those aesthetics were sealed in a thick layer of clear and buffed to a wet-looking shine. And in the Spring of 2014, this coupe hit the scene as a dreamy pavement pounder that’s poised to claim trophies and sure to turn heads.
ENGINE
Gaze in to this PF’s polished and painted engine bay and you’ll find 472 cubic inches of Hemi big block that, despite being currently tuned for mild 9 to 1 compression, is capable of busting healthy 12 to 1 compression into roughly 650 horsepower. Back when this Plymouth was certified for competition, circa 2011, it torched the quarter in 9.1 seconds at 143MPH! But since its street-friendly overhaul, performed in early 2015 by the folks at Howton’s Automotive of Hueytown, Alabama, the car’s 5-gallon fuel cell and beefy cooling system permit roughly 50 miles of road time or 30 minutes in traffic. The foundation for that performance is a 2005 Chrysler iron block that’s filled with a forged MoPar crank, Eagle H-beam connecting rods, forged JE pistons and a Comp roller cam. Those components spin thanks to Hilborn mechanical fuel injection. At the sides of those stacks, Keith Black Hemi Fuel heads hide slick Indy roller rockers under polished valve covers and polished breathers. At the front of those breathers, an MSD Pro-Billet distributor sequences spark between an MSD Pro Power HVC coil, MSD 7AL ignition and MSD Super Conductor plug wires. Under those wires, coated and baffled Dan Olsen zoomies look almost as cool as they sound. In front of those pipes, a 5-gallon fuel cell feeds a Hilborn mechanical pump, which rides between an ATI Super Damper, a Milodon gear drive, Milodon oil components and a Meziere electric water pump. And that pump feeds a big Griffin radiator that’s hung between a polished expansion tank and brisk electric pusher fan.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
The car’s full tube chassis, fabricated by Jeffers Pro Cars of House Springs, Missouri, stretches a combination of chromoly and mild steel over a 125-inch wheelbase. Up front, a custom 4-bar suspension marries a 6-inch dropped tube ’suicide’ axle with a transverse spring and polished PRO Shocks. Out back, a Chassisworks 4-link mixes AVO coil-overs with a full range of adjustment. That back-halved rear-clip rolls on a narrowed, braced and powder-coated Moser 9-inch, which twists Richmond gears between Moser 40-spline axles. That rear end spins thanks to a Drive Shafts Unlimited driveshaft, which threads a tough Chrysler A727 TorqueFlite that was built by A&A Transmissions of Camby, Indiana. Wilwood Racing discs clamp a combination of drilled and vented rotors, two of which are attached to custom-fabricated hubs. Power meets the pavement through polished Real Rodder meats, which jerk Hoosier Quick Time Pros. And turns come courtesy of Stiletto steering, which angles spindle-mount Radirs and DOT-rated 5.0/ M&H Racemasters.
INTERIOR
Inside this coupe you’ll find a 14-point Funny Car roll cage that was NHRA-certified to seconds as of 2011. That cage cradles Jaz aluminum seats, which are wrapped in color-keyed, MoPar-themed vinyl. In front of those seats, a simple dash drapes a flashy (*-inFLAMEous(*- script over clean Auto Meter Pro-Comp Ultra-Lite telemetry. Beneath that dash, a steel floor balances plush MoPar mats between diamond plate foot pedals and a familiar B&M Pro Stick that mates a reversed shift pattern with sturdy line lock. At the front of the cockpit, a removable steering wheel laps a prominent MSD shift light while keeping the car’s trans-lock within a finger’s reach. And the driver stays safe thanks to a 5lb. fire suppression system, a sturdy RJS window net and a 5-point RCI cam-lock harness.
Lust worthy, brutally fast and fully capable of cruising up and down Main Street, this awesome Plymouth is an excellent combination of classic street rod looks and incredible pro street performance. Call, click or visit for more information.
