Yes, you can become a pilot of a powered airplane and take passengers in just 10 hours of required flight time. What’s the deal? The Private Pilot Glider rating. After learning about this rating, I couldn’t believe it takes just HALF the time of becoming a Sport Pilot. All it requires is the airplane to be registered as a glider or motor glider. The Pipistrel Alpha Trainer can be registered as a light sport, homebuilt experimental, or motorglider. As a motorglider, you get all the perks of a light sport airplane in half of the flight training time. (Refer to FAR 61:109 and 61:129) As a motorglider, you have many privileges that a sport pilot doesn’t such as flying at night, taking more than 1 passenger, and flying higher than 10,000 feet.
