This interview with the former Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, possibly recorded in the 1990s, is insightful because of what it reveals. Arafat shows us a modern 10 Agorot coin (Israeli currency) and on the back is the Menorah - the seven-branched candelabrum and underneath it, the map of Greater Israel, which includes all of Palestine (Israel including Occupied Palestinian Territories), the Sinai, all of Lebanon, all of Jordan, two-thirds of Syria, three-quarters of Iraq and one-third of Saudi Arabia. What he was intimating to Arab leaders at the time, was that the political agenda of the Israeli government was, over time, to occupy all of these lands and to “be aware“. Now many might say it is a pipedream and Israel will never be able to take over the Arab lands, and that might be true. However, considering Israel’s direct violations of the Oslo Accords, the ongoing construction of settlements in the West Bank, the oppression, intimidation and occupation of Palestinian land and the last 7 weeks of obliteration of Gaza and the deaths of more than 12,000, if not more, Palestinian civilians, their forced movement to the south while the Israeli military moves in to occupy the north, indicates that the right-wing ambitions of Netanyahu’s coalition are to realise the vision of a Greater Israel.
