Rhoticity in Britain and Ireland - 1650-2020 (animated map with authentic audio recordings)

The audio recordings are a selection of recordings of rhotic accents from around Britain and Ireland. Here are links to the full recordings: Appledore, Kent #_ Mount Brandon, County Kerry, Ireland Harwood, Lancashire Merriot, Somerset Cronberry, Ayrshire, Scotland Welwick, Yorkshire Corrections: I noticed that the caption at 0:20 doesn’t make sense and is probably also incorrect. The prestige accent was variably rhotic until as late as 1860. It is also very likely that all accents had at least some traces of rhoticity later than 1800, so maybe there shouldn’t be any white on the map until 1850. In 1900, there should probably be more partially rhotic (light blue) in rural areas. It may even be that everywhere in the North and Midlands in 1900 had at least some older partially rhotic speakers at this time. Most of Manchester and the surrounding areas should be partially rhotic in 1950.
