Heraldic Blaze (US / Norway) — Blazoned Heraldry — 2024 demo

The debut of this North American and Norwegian coalition. Despite being a demo and the first offering of this project, the quality is surprisingly high, obviously due in part to the involvement of the acclaimed Peregrinus on guitars (alongside another member, Argent Pale, which takes care of the vocals, bass and the notorious flute. The music itself is a fascinating blend of styles. At its core, it iss a moderately gritty black metal experience, but Heraldic Blaze is not afraid to venture beyond the expected. Clear sections burst through the darkness, showcasing rich harmonies. These flourishes often come courtesy of the guitars, imbuing the music with a distinct “black and roll“ feel. Flute adds another layer, sparsely woven in to create a subtle folk atmosphere that sits deep within the black metal framework. The track, “The Knight’s Folly,“ and several other brief transitions even incorporate madrigal influences, adding a truly unique touch. While the combination of black metal, rock n’ roll, folk, and even madrigal elements might seem unconventional on paper, Heraldic Blaze pulls it off remarkably well. The result is an aggressive and well-written release that stands out from the crowd.
