Oakton College - Drawing Demo: Still Life Value Study in Charcoal
Materials needed:
Two sheets of 18“x24“ newsprint paper
One stick of willow or vine charcoal (the thickest one you have!)
Kneaded eraser
Blending stump
Arrange a still life with at least 6 objects that have different values: 2 dark, 2 medium, 2 light. Place them on a light background. Draw directly from life (don’t use a photograph). You will create a value study. There are two things you will need to focus on in this exercise:
1. Eliminate all contours and leave only values.
2. The main value of each object in your drawing should match the still life.
