Quicksilver Messenger Service - Who Do You Love? (1969)

Side One of Happy Trails and probably one of the most legendary live tracks by a rock band in history. This is the video I had hoped to finish in time for New Year’s Eve, which I now know would have been impossible. With the completion of “Who Do You Love?“ (given the title “Who Do You Love Suite“ on the album), Quicksilver’s iconic 1969 release, Happy Trails, most of which was recorded in 1968, is now an entire music video, with all of Side two having been finalized by me back in 2019. I don’t think I could ever heap enough praise on the many talented musicians and members of Quicksilver Messenger Service who made this masterpiece, and album, possible. The interplay of two of rock’s greatest guitarists, Gary Duncan and John Cipollina, is never more perfected than it is on this live cover of Bo Diddley’s most famous 50’s rock anthem. Before there was The Allman Brothers, there was Duncan and Cipollina, and before there was “Whipping Post“ there was “Who Do You Love?“ Largely a montage that relates to the theme of the song, there are also synchronized excerpts from three live concerts. I’m not sure if the work that went into the making of this video measures up or not, I hope so, but it still is a hell of way to start out 2023. Hopefully there will be much more to come.
