Maoming is a prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province. It is located on the coast of the South China Sea, in the southwest of Guangdong Province, with the great southwest of the motherland at its back. It has jurisdiction over Maonan District and Dianbai District, and is in charge of Gaocheng City, Huazhou City and Xinyi City. It has three economic functional zones: Maoming Binhai New Area, Maoming High-tech Zone and Maoming Shuidongwan New City. The total land area of the city’s administrative area is 11, square kilometres. According to the data of the seventh census, the resident population of Maoming was 6,174,050 as of 00:00 on 1 November 2020. Maoming is located at the intersection of three national economic zones, namely the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Beibu Gulf City Cluster and the Hainan Free Trade Zone . Maoming is an important petrochemical base and energy base in China, with six leading industries including petrochemicals, agricultural and sideline products, mineral resources, light industry and textiles, medicine and health, metal processing and advanced equipment manufacturing. The county economy of Maoming has been developing steadily, ranking at the forefront of northwest Guangdong. It is the prefecture-level city with the highest gross agricultural output value in Guangdong Province. Maoming is an excellent tourist city in China with all-terrain features. It has rich tourism resources, including the “six points and one line“ of coastal tourism, the cultural tourism of Lady Xian, the beautiful countryside and the leisure tourism of mountain sports. Maoming is an important place where the “Gaoliang culture“ originated, flourished and was passed down. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Gaozhou Prefecture (the present-day Maoming area) was an important political, economic and cultural centre in western Guangdong. Maoming is the birthplace of the “Three Represents“ important thought, “China’s Top 100 Cities in Comprehensive Strength“, “National Garden City“, and “China’s Excellent Tourism City“.
