Ancient Mummified Mermaid From The 1700s Is Under Investigation | Japan News| NewsRme

This strange-looking creature (or animals) was claimed to have been captured in a fishing net off the coast of Kochi Prefecture, Japan, between 1736 and 1741. Now experts have begun their endeavor to investigate the “mermaid mummy.“ The “mermaid“ has been housed at the Enjuin temple in Asakuchi since its discovery. Asahi says that for the first time, it will be looked at scientifically. In order to conduct CT scans, researchers from Kurashiki University of Science and Arts have so far taken a mummy from the shrine. The DNA samples recovered from the mummy will also be tested to determine what animals were used to build it — it is widely thought that a monkey and a fish were employed. Previous research has examined similar creatures, including one “mermaid“ who was shown to be a fish linked to a wire and wood body and finished with human hair.
