Falvetti, Il Diluvio Universale, complete & subtitled full HD - YouTube
Myrna Herzog conducts Ensemble PHOENIX on period instruments. This is the only complete, unabridged and untransposed rendition of Falvetti’s masterpiece available at the moment.
Both Giattini’s text and Falvetti’s music are presented here in their entirety, including “Ciò che a un fiato creai, distruggo a un cenno“ (the necessary complement to ““Gli protervi nel mar punir si denno“), and in the original tonalities.
In this Israeli premiere of the oratorio, Herzog made a point to preserve the original construction of the work, bringing out and enhancing Falvetti’s creative melodic, harmonic and dramatic developments, as well as his subtle interaction of movements which build a breathtaking outcome.
The oratorio has been conceived for five singers (Dialogo a cinque voci) and thus is presented, displaying the interpreters’ versatility as an extra attraction.
Claire Meghnagi (Water & Rad), Oshri Segev (Fire and Noah), Alon Harari (Justice & Death), Einat Aronstein (Air & Human Nature),
Guy Pelc (Earth & God).
The instrumental ensemble with period instruments includes baroque violins, viols, baroque cello, violone, cornet, sackbut, baroque bassoon, organ and varied percussion which, in addition to the usual tabor, frame drum and tambourine, features a traditional Sicilian tamburello made in Sicily especially for the project.
Noam Schuss & Ralph Allen - baroque violins; Tal Arbel & Sonja Navot - violas da gamba; Myrna Herzog - baroque cello; Yehuda (Hudi) Itzhak Halevy – violone; Alma Meyer - cornetto & recorders; Liron Rinot - sackbut; Alexander Fine - baroque bassoon; Ian Aylon - baroque guitar; Aviad Stier - organ; Nadav Gaiman - percussion.
On PHOENIX rendition of Il Diluvio:
“A piece of history, in the history of baroque concerts in Israel: “Il Diluvio Universale“, the wonderful Sicilian baroque oratorio by Michelangelo Falvetti (1642-1692) , on the story of Noah and the Flood, composed at Messina at the end of the 17th century, appeared for the first time in a public concert in Israel, signed by five of the finest Israeli singers and the musicians of Ensemble PHOENIX conducted by Myrna Herzog“. Hagai Hitron, HaAretz
“A major event of the 2015 October Abu Gosh Vocal Music Festival was the Israeli premiere of Michelangelo Falvetti’s “Il Diluvio Universale” (The Great Flood), to a libretto of Vincenzo Giattini, a work of exceptionally fine quality, its originality and inventiveness fired with fine melodic, harmonic and polyphonic writing. Performing the work were singers and instrumentalists of Ensemble PHOENIX under the direction of the ensemble’s founder and musical director Myrna Herzog, who has once again thrilled festival audiences, introducing them to a little-known and rare Baroque treasure that recounts a well-known Bible story with freshness and magic.” Pamela Hickman
“I really like it, it’s a performance musicologically cared for and yet full of passion and emotion with (rare thing) an excellent Italian pronunciation!” Fabrizio Longo, editor of Il Diluvio Universale
