A Sky News investigation in 2017 found that children as young as four were working in Congolese mines where cobalt is extracted for smartphones. Most of the world’s cobalt comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where little regulation requires companies to trace their cobalt supply lines. Sky News visited a string of mines in the DRC’s former Katanga Province and found children working at all of them. The Chinese mining company Huayou refused to apologize after Sky News revealed that it was sourcing cobalt mined by children as young as four. Despite DRC being home to more than half the world’s cobalt, its citizens are among the poorest on Earth.
