Daimonji / Gozan no Okuribi (2012) - 大文字／五山の送り火

“Gozan no Okuribi“, better known as “Daimonji“, is a festival in Kyoto, Japan celebrated during the O-Bon holiday to honor the spirits of our ancestors. Daimonji takes place every year on August 16, and during the festival five bonfires are lit on mountains surrounding Kyoto city. The fires signify the time when spirits of deceased family members, who are said to come back to earth during O-Bon, return to the spirit world.
