Ethan Leinwand - Skippy Whippy (The Mississippi Jook Band)
In the summer of 1936 - in Jackson, MS - a super-group of sorts recorded under the name The Mississippi Jook Band. Featuring Blind Roosevelt Graves on guitar and Cooney Vaughn on piano, their 4 issued sides are serious dynamos! These are the only known recordings of pianist Cooney Vaughn, and are ferocious enough to validate his reputation as the best barrelhouse pianist in Mississippi.
In this version (faster than the original) I try to capture the rollicking feel of the whole band, and channel the shredding power of Mr. Cooney Vaughn.
