In this video, I attempt to replicate a Tuatahi racing axe. As the name implies, the tuatahi racing axe is used in competition speed chopping. The axe head is keystone shaped, and, my axe measured 6.5“ long x 6.5“wide at widest point. Scoops are ground out of the sidesof the head, presumably to give it more clearance and prevent binding. I forged my experimental replica from a single piece of 5160 spring steel. After forging to rough shape, it was refined on a grinder, then heat treated, polished and mounted on a wooden handle.
Although, I am clumsy and unpractised, the axe proved to be effective and my humble opinion , a very good design.
