Israel targets Hezbollah commander in Beirut strike
Israel has targeted a senior Hezbollah commander in a Beirut suburb in retaliation for an attack that killed 12 children last weekend.
Witnesses heard a “loud blast” in the Lebanese capital as the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) launched a “targeted strike” on Fouad Sukar, whom it said was responsible for the Golan Heights attack on Saturday.
A security source told Reuters that it was unclear whether Sukar, who is the group’s second-in-command and in charge of its military activities, had survived.
The strike took place in the Dahieh neighbourhood of Beirut, which is known as a Hezbollah stronghold, and came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a “severe response” to the Golan Heights attack.
The US had reportedly urged Israel to avoid the Lebanese capital and civilian infrastructure to avoid causing collateral damage.
