Guard Retention: Preventing the Pass and Recovering the Guard - Most guard retention in BJJ and submission grappling focuses on the leg work involved in preventing someone from passing the guard. Leg work IS critical... but it’s only half the battle. Guard passing and solidifying a pin has a lot to do with what happens in the transition from leg/hip control to head/shoulder control. That’s why any work on guard retention must also include the importance of frames at the upper body, and how to use them in replacing the guard.
