Scrat’s Happy Ending (Bye-Bye, Blue Sky)

ORIGINAL VIDEO: Another bittersweet video for me to make. Yesterday, Disney Plus released a series of Ice Age shorts called “Scrat Tales“, which center on our favorite saber-toothed squirrel as he continues to chase after his prized this time he’s also looking after a baby Scrat and learning the struggles of parenthood. It’s significant because (besides Nimona), this was the last major project Blue Sky Studios (the CGI animation company behind Ice Age, Robots, The Peanuts Movie, Rio, and many others) produced before it was shut down by Disney last year due to the economic impact of COVID-19. But that wasn’t the last thing Blue Sky Studios made in , an anonymous former Blue Sky employee posted an unlisted YouTube video that has a short animation made by the Blue Sky if you’re an Ice Age fan like yours truly, you better get some tissues. As y’all know, a big part of each and every Ice Age movie and/or special (excluding that Buck Wild movie) is always the subplot of Scrat chasing after his acorn, and it always leads him to some crazy AF adventures that prevent him from getting the acorn for good. Well the Blue Sky Studios team got together during the studio’s final days to create one final shot as a farewell to the beloved animation studio, and so they did the unimaginable and FINALLY let Scrat get the acorn and even EAT it after 20 years of trying to get it. This satisfying conclusion to a long-lasting arc was a send-off on their own terms. Though Disney owns Ice Age now, I like to consider this the canonical end to the franchise as we know it. To say this is bittersweet would be a gross understatement. It just makes sense for Scrat to be in the final animation Blue Sky Studios has ever made, considering how Scrat was the first character to appear in Blue Sky’s first movie, “Ice Age“, 20 years ago. So much that Scrat eventually became the studio’s official mascot. It certainly came full-circle. For the past two decades we’ve seen Scrat go on all kinds of crazy adventures that all involve him chasing after an acorn. The fact that now we finally see Scrat achieve his dream and eat that damn acorn hits hard. I’m beyond happy and satisfied that Scrat finally has a happy ending and he got what he’s been going after. But I’m also sad knowing that Blue Sky Studios being shut down by Disney was the reason this happened in the first place. I’ll forever be grateful to the studio for making so many memories with the incredible films they’ve produced. Bye, Scrat. And farewell, Blue Sky Studios. Thank you for everything.
