Asteroid 231937 (2001 FO32) will pass the Earth on March 21, 2021. It will be the biggest asteroid of 2021 to come this close -- close enough for a dedicated observer to see with a backyard telescope. The ideal backyard viewing location will be in South America. Africa is also fairly well aligned. Viewers in Australia will deal with a near-horizon view and a fading target. A view of the Earth in the video can help you decide if your backyard (or mountaintop) location will work.
At closest approach, the asteroid will be moving among the stars at a rate equal to one lunar diameter every 8.5 minutes -- and it should be obvious once you have it in your sights.
