John Hilliard - Depth of Field

Lecture date: 1997-02-21 The photographic work of John Hilliard often recalls cinematic and advertising iconography. But any conventional reading of this work is frustrated by other signs manifest in its construction that engage with more complex scenarios. Using different depths of field, multiple exposures, reflection, inversion, pulled focus and other photographic devices Hilliard, in the construction of his spatial narratives, creates a complex web of associations and meanings that reveal the image as an illusionary space.
