Powerful M6.5 earthquake shook thousands of houses in Java, Indonesia A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Java on Friday at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake followed a 6.0 magnitude tremor reported over four hours earlier. The epicenter was approximately 130 kilometers north of Tuban in East Java province. According to numerous social media reports from the area, the tremors were strongly felt in Surabaya and neighboring provincial cities. Brief tremors were also felt in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, approximately 600 kilometers from the epicenter. Authorities stated that the 6.5 magnitude earthquake is not capable of generating a tsunami. The previous earthquake resulted in damage to one house and a public building in the city of Tuban.
