Dennis Meadows Interview p3/4 (Economics, Globalisation, Responsibilities, Personal Fear)
“If this isn’t collapse, what do you call it?”
The Limits to Growth (1972) explains endless growth on a finite planet is impossible. Based on growth of consumption and population, the decline of resources and the increase of various forms of pollution this hugely influential report drew different scenarios for so-called ‘overshoot & collapse’.
45 years later we seem to be perfectly right on track of those very projections, co-author Dennis Meadows explains in part 3 of our special interview. “My goodness, look around you...”
We think it’s very sobering to see that mankind is somehow incapable to implement this basic understanding of global sustainability – even though it has been available to us for so many years.
That’s why we also think it’s very important for us all not to try to reinvent a wheel that is broken to begin with, a wheel that spins out of control, by nature of its design. Somehow we have to REALLY do things differently from what we’ve done –globally– over the last couple of decades.
And it’s not like we’re all totally blank about what to do, it’s mostly that we really do not want to hear it. That’s because it starts with less instead of more – not on a personal level, on a global level. That should be our goal – that’s where we need to go.
