Al-Aqsa Raids: Why did Israel storm the holy mosque?

On the second Friday of Ramadan, Israeli forces stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque with tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades, entering into the prayer halls and attacking and detaining worshippers. Israeli authorities say it was provoked by fireworks fired by Palestinians, but it was likely a coordinated raid coinciding with the first day of the Jewish holiday of Passover, during which hundreds of settlers are expecting to enter into the Al-Aqsa complex to perform religious rites.
