Dino Valenti Dies; Rock Singer Was 51

Dino Valenti, the lead singer of the rock group Quicksilver Messenger Service and the writer of the Youngbloods’ hit “Get Together,“ died on Wednesday at his home, The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa reported. He was 51.
He had undergone brain surgery several years ago, but it was not known that he been ill recently, said his sister, Kay O’Gara.
Mr. Valenti, whose original name was Chester Powers, was born in Danbury, Conn. He first began performing in the folk clubs of New York City. After moving to San Francisco, he was a founding member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, which briefly became one of San Francisco’s leading psychedelic bands of the late 1960’s, along with the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane.
