This is an animation of a Phénakistiscope (. Fantascope) disc by Thomas Mann Baynes. It was published in 1833 by Ackermann and Co., who had also produced inventor Joseph Plateau’s first discs earlier in the same year.
Note how the rat runs over the side of the disc, which was specially shaped to achieve the effect.
