Charles Kupchan: THE WEST NEEDS A NEW STRATEGY IN UKRAINE

Eva Nowotny in conversation with Charles Kupchan THE WEST NEEDS A NEW STRATEGY IN UKRAINE The war in Ukraine has been going on for over a year and so far, it has turned out far better for Ukraine than most predicted. But there is uncertainty towards where the war is headed and thus calls for a diplomatic end to the conflict are growing. However, with Moscow and Kyiv vowing to keep up the fight, conditions for a negotiated settlement do not seem to be given yet. The question arising is what strategy is needed from the West. It’s policy of allowing Ukraine to define success and set the war aims has now runs its course – regardless of whether it made sense at the outset of the war. So what approach is needed from the West and how could it be implemented? Charles Kupchan is Professor of international Affairs in the School of Foreign Service and Government Department at Georgetown University and Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). From 2014 to 2017 Kupchan served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for European Affairs on the National Security Council in the Obama White House. He was also Director for European Affairs on the NSC during the first Clinton administration. Before joining the Clinton NSC, he worked in the U.S. Department of State on the Policy Planning Staff. Previously, he was Assistant Professor of Politics at Princeton University. Charles Kupchan is the author of numerous books and papers on international and security affairs.
