#FacesofCM: Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi | Legend “Tuku“ talks environment, childhood, and the power of music

In October of 2018, Conservation Music had the honor to work with the legendary Dr. Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi on a music video (to be shared very soon) for his environmentally-minded song “Matope,” from his final album, “Hany’ga Concern.” As we write this on the 23rd of January, 2019, we are shattered after learning of his untimely death, exactly one year to the day since the passing of one of his best friends, Bra Hugh Masekela. The world has lost one of its angels. True to his well-known spirit of kindness, philanthropy, and global concern and engagement, Tuku sat down with us after the music video shoot for an interview. We share with you a few of his thoughts on the environment, his childhood, and the catalytic power of music to touch people’s hearts and create positive change for the future, as a tribute to this unbelievably good man. “...the purpose of a song is to give life. If you educate somebody, you are giving life. If you heal their heart, you are giving life.“ Our thoughts and solidarity are with Oliver’s family, friends, and all those whose hearts he has healed. Rest in Peace, Oliver.
