Jadaka al-Ghaithu - Arabic Andalusian Song

Music & lyrics by Ibn al-Khatib, instrumental by Ido Romano, vocals by Farya Faraji. This is a famous piece of music from the Andalusi repertoire, allegedly written in the 14th century by Andalusi Arabic polymath Ibn al-Khatib. The music however, may not be confidently attributed to him, as different versions in different melodies and different maqams altogether exist. This is however the most famous one in Maqam Huseyni. The very Maqam itself makes the historical Andalusian origin of this melody doubtful, as Andalusi music’s defining characteristic is its lack of microtonality, compared to Arabic music geographically more to the east. Therefore, what can be attributed to Ibn-al-Khatib with certainty is the lyrics. I wanted the arrangement to stay true to the musical practices of the era, therefore it is entirely heterophonic with no modern accompaniments, only an oud and a ney played by expert musician Ido Romano.
