1964 Pontiac Tempest Custom GTO Wagon Running Walk Around
To be offered exclusively on Bring a Trailer
Vintique Motors is thrilled to present this incredible 1964 Pontiac Tempest Custom Wagon that is built as a GTO tribute!
First introduced in 1961, the Tempest nameplate was Pontiac’s version of the new Y-Body unibody construction allowing for lighter weights and smaller overall size. By 1964, the Tempest was changed over to the new A-Body which revered back to traditional frames with a conventional front mounted engine with rear-wheel drive. The 1964 model year would be a single year only design with horizontal headlights before moving to the vertical headlight design in 1965-1967. There would be three series of Tempest offered: the Tempest, Tempest LeMans, and Tempest Custom with 9 different models available in the three Tempest series. Body styles were comprised of 2-door convertibles, 2-door sport coupes, 4-door sedans, and 4-door station wagons available with either a straight 6 or a V8.
Per the PHS documentation, this 1964 Tempest Custom Station Wagon was built on 11/4/1963 at the Fremont, California assembly plant and was subsequently sold new at Golden Pontiac, Inc. in Yakima, Washington. It was original finished in Sunfire Red with a Black vinyl top with a Red interior and built with a 215ci 6-cylinder engine producing 140hp mated to a 3-speed column mounted manual transmission. It was optioned with a bench seat with seat belts, custom décor trim group, mirror group, dual speed windshield wipers with washer, deluxe hubcaps, reverse lamps, push-button radio, heavy-duty radiator, and luggage rack.
It is believed to have been a Washington and California car since 1964 and in 2010, it received a restoration by Todd’s GTOs in Sylmar, California and was restored as a “what-if?“ build meaning what if Pontiac had offered the GTO option on the Tempest Custom station wagon? The result is essentially just that... a 1964 Pontiac GTO station wagon! During the restoration, the original Sunfire Red exterior with Black vinyl top was kept but the luggage rack was removed for a cleaner look. The interior was changed from the original red with a bench seat to black with front bucket seats. Under the hood sits a YS-code 1969 400ci V8 with a tri-power carburetor set-up hooked to a 4-speed manual with a floor mounted Hurst shifter. Additional improvements include a R134a Vintage Air Conditioning system, a Retrosounds radio, 14“ mag wheels mounted on brand new BF Goodrich redline tires with 2021 date codes.
After completing the restoration Todd’s GTOs consigned it to the 2011 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction where it was purchased by a gentleman from Louisiana for his large collection of mostly custom vehicles. He retained the car for 10 years until we purchased it from him earlier this year. It comes complete with all the Pontiac Historical Society (PHS) documents and is fully serviced and ready for the road. Do not miss this incredible opportunity to acquire this GTO tribute wagon!
