Stargazers plunged into darkness as solar eclipse crosses North America

Crowds in Mexico have been plunged into darkness as the town of Mazatlán became the first to experience the North American eclipse. Mazatlán, on the Pacific Coast, is the first site in the eclipse’s path of totality, which will curve north-east across Mexico before reaching the US. Eclipse-watchers cheered, whooped and took photos as the moon slowly obscured the sun. Viewing is uncertain in Texas, where overcast skies have threatened to derail the spectacle and an eclipse festival was cancelled after warnings of bad weather.
