22edo + the average tuning system jam [ benyamind - “The Mirror“ ]

Here I am jamming to “The Mirror“ by benyamind, a beautiful track composed in 22EDO. I (uninvitedly) joined in with the Average Tuning System on guitar. In my previous video, I explained a bit more about this system, which is a statistical tuning system that promises, with some tolerance, to match at least a pentatonic scale in almost any other existing tuning system. The interval matrix highlights in red the chosen matching phase. The system actually approximates all 22EDO steps (which in turn approximate just intervals), but not every key has them. Some keys match more than others. Initially, I thought I was going to need to detune the guitar or the track to find the correct phase. It’s possible that some of the same intervals are present, but they could be in different transpositions. However, I was surprised to notice that my guitar was already in phase with the track at that key. This is probably because I tuned my guitar with a C reference at ~261Hz, and most synths also use it as a central note, which Benyamind used in this track. So, the match may be emerging from there, but I’m not entirely sure! The images are from SFINX, a free app that I created for this purpose, which generates graphics of microtonal guitars and scales. So, all this trouble just to play the pentatonic scale? Of course, yes! You can also jam with a 12EDO guitar over this 22EDO track, but the pentatonic scale there is not exactly the same as the one used here.
