This is a colorized scanning electron microscopy picture of Human Bronchial Epithelial cells grown at the air-liquid interface to mimic the conditions they encounter in the lungs. Upon differentiation, these cells grow cilia (manually colorized in pink) making the tissue look like an underwater landscape. The model is used to to investigate different diseases, like ciliopathies, bacterial infections and even SARS-CoV-2 infections.
