My last attempt at an anamorphic DIY solution and for now my last anamorphic video at all - dual focus synchronization made on my 3D printer - Kowa Prominar 16A vs Helios 58mm. It’s not sophisticated engineering, but a simple gear ratio - Kowa’s rotation is aprox 76,9% of its circumference, Helios is 21,2% in the opposite direction (to match Kowa’s minimum focusing distance 1,5m) - the final ratio is 3,623, so I chose 20 vs 73 teeth gears in 0.8 module and it works! :-)
Sadly, this solution is limited by Kowa’s minimum focus distance - aprox 1,5 meter / less that 5 ft, so its not ideal anyway. Of course, you can use diopter for closer shots, but I don’t like any other optical elements in front of the anamorphic lens due of unwanted crazy flares all around - dual focus synchro is cleanest solution for flaring.
And yes, I have also a single focus adapteur and it works really great - minimum focus distance is very good and bokeh is nicely waterfall, but it has same problem with flares as any other diopters
