Seth Lakeman & Fisherman’s Friends perform ‘Brave Volunteers’ to Al Kassim, the man who inspired it.
Seth and Fisherman’s Friends wrote the song as part of 21st Century Folk, Radio 2’s series that sees five people have songs written about their lives.
Al was once rescued by a lifeboat off the coast of Portsmouth. He now volunteers at the Tower Lifeboat Station on the River Thames, the busiest RNLI base in the UK. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution marked its 200th anniversary in 2024.
To hear Al’s full story, find 21st Century Folk on BBC Sounds:
Recorded in St. James the Great Church, St. Kew, Cornwall. Produced by 7digital for the BBC.
