Facebook Group: Today’s Tango Is… Don Juan – Tango – Juan D’Arienzo 15-06-1948 The Story is on the video notes (Show More) Music: Ernesto Ponzio Photo: Art by Fabian Pérez Composed in 1898 by Ernesto Ponzio (10-07-1885 - 21-10-1934). Around the turn of that century, Ponzio “El Pibe“, scratched a living by playing violin in various brothels. Later, as a gifted violinist playing at the more fashionable “Hansen’s“, he renamed an earlier tango in honour of a regular patron, known as Don Juan. So, not a reference to the famous Latin lover! Although now an instrumental tango, the original lyrics present the narrator as “el taita del barrio“ (the alternative title of this tango) - the Daddy of the Neighbourhood, though probably more accurately, the neighbourhood gang boss. Ponzio himself also achieved notoriety as a pistol-whipping thug! Ponzio was not a prolific composer but did leave us Don Juan, Ataniche and Pipermint. The famous dancer “El Cachafaz“ (14-02-1885 - 07-02-1942) died of a heart attack in Mar del Plata, Argentina. He had just danced to “Don Juan“.
