YUGOSLAVIA: KOSOVO: PRISTINA: CIVILIANS IN SHOOTOUT - UPDATE

(19 Jun 1999) English/Nat There was a shootout between an Albanian and three Serb civilians in downtown Pristina on Saturday. One man fired a handgun from his apartment window at an Albanian man crouched behind his car. Another man brandishing a Kalashnikov was also at the scene and charged the man behind the car, but didn’t fire. KFOR soldiers quickly arrived at the scene and make some arrests. British KFOR forces face a difficult task in securing peace and order on the streets of Pristina. The latest violence occurred on Saturday when a few remaining Serbs fired a shots at the civilian car driven by an Albanian. The driver attempted to take cover, hiding behind the car, after shots were fired. Two to three men, believed to be Serbs, came from behind the corner of the building, and one of them charged on the driver with a AK47. The weapon was wrestled from the assailant, and two more shots were fired. A quick response from the Irish Guards regiment of the British KFOR forces led to the disarming of the man with the weapon. KFOR soldiers inspected the place where the shots were fired from and found a weapon.
