DMSA vs. MAG3 scan | Nuclear Medicine | In-depth review
This video covers the differences, clinical applications, interpretation and radiation dose of a DMSA and MAG3 scan. It is ideal for med students and for newly qualified urologists/nuclear medicine physicians who want an in-depth review of renal scans.
- DMSA is mainly used for the early diagnosis of pyelonephritis in children or for identifying renal scarring after recurrent urinary tract infections. If left untreated, renal scarring may lead to hypertension, proteinuria and end-stage renal disease.
- The MAG3 renogram is a dynamic study in which the perfusion into the kidneys and drainage out of the kidneys can be followed. It is mainly used to detect hydronephrosis or renal tract obstruction.
