It belongs to the Santa Cruz do Sul-Lajeado geographic region and the immediate region of Lajeado, being its most populous city. The IBGE revised population from the 2022 Census was 92,951 inhabitants, distributed over 91,231 kmΒ², which makes Lajeado one of the ten cities with the highest population density in the state. The name Lajeado comes from the reference point given to the sesmarias. In the Taquari River and Arroio do Engenho, the waters formed cascades over flagstones, hence the name of the city. However, due to the Bom Retiro do Sul dam, the Taquari flagstones, as well as its waterfalls, are submerged. In 1855, the Conventos Colony received its first immigrants and, in 1857, it already had 168 inhabitants, of which 81 men and 87 women, 49 of whom arrived that year from Europe. The following year, 20 more settlers arrived, thus distributing the population according to religion and nationality: 40% Brazilians and 60% Germans. Of this total, 100 were male and 88 female. The colony produced beans, corn, potatoes, wheat, broad beans and barley. There was also Italian immigration, notably in the old districts of Marques de Souza, Progresso and FΓ£o, which began years later. There was also colonization by Portuguese-Brazilians on a smaller scale. Regional Language: Riograndenser HunsrΓΌckisch, or Riograndense Hunriqueano in Portuguese, is a South Brazilian minority language of Germanic origin spoken since pioneering times in Lajeado as well as by thousands of people spread across several other municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and even in adjacent regions .
