Ururdhagaz / Thyark / Altar Of Moss - Winds of Desolation (full split, 2024)

My penultimate feature of this week’s Dungeon Synth Sunday is a new three-way split from the newly forged yet instantly exemplary Nocturnal Curse Records. Winds of Desolation is the title (I especially appreciate that the splits on this label are given proper titles instead of just being called ‘split’) for the triumvirate of Ururdhagaz, Thyark, and label-owner, Altar Of Moss (aka Ysbryd, of Ysbrydnos), and an album of bombastic mythological dungeon synth. The dark arts of Ururdhagaz open this release with a desolate vista of bleak dark dungeon ambience that marches with a battle weary dignity and solemnity, peaking into raw epic riffs and symphonic grandiloquence. Thyark contributes the tracks from which this album gets its name, as Winds of Desolation provides the experience its name suggests, subjecting the listener to chilling harsh drones and sparse melodies, that whip into grand drifts of epic percussion lofted medieval dungeon synth. The album is completed with a single track of regal grandeur from Altar Of Moss, with fanfares of processional horns contrasting against whisps of sinister melodies, imparting a sense of dread and disquiet.
