Gabon celebrate “liberation“; Military appointments new leader
Military personnel who seized power in Gabon in a coup on Wednesday, August 30th, 2023, have announced on national television that they have appointed General Brice Oligui Nguema, leader of Gabon’s elite Republican Guard – the unit in charge of the president’s security, as the country’s interim leader. Their announcement came just hours after the declaration of a military takeover which occurred after the electoral commission declared President Ali Bongo’s disputed victory in the Saturday, August 26th, 2023 election. After the announcement, Gabonese television kept showing the same images: a man believed to be Nguema, in fatigues and a green beret being carried through the streets of Libreville by happy military personnel screaming, “Oligui président.“
General Nguema’s rise to prominence has been marked by his influential role within Gabon’s political and military circles, and he is widely considered one of the most enigmatic figures in the country. Nguema, now 48, was born to a father from the Fang people, Gabon’s primary ethnic group, and spent his childhood in Haut-Ogooue province, a Bongo stronghold. Nguema trained at the prestigious Royal Military Academy of Meknes in Morocco and began his military career by serving as an aide-de-camp to Ali Bongo’s father, Omar Bongo, who ruled Gabon with an iron fist for almost 42 years. According to a former close coworker, Gen Nguema was exceptionally close to Omar Bongo, serving him loyally from 2005 till his death in 2009 in a Spanish hospital.
