“In 1958, the United States was in the midst of a nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union. As part of this competition, the U.S. carried out a series of nuclear tests known as Operation Hardtack I. These tests were conducted in the remote Pacific Marshall Islands, and one of the most notable experiments in this series was the ’Umbrella’ test.“
Test Name: Operation Hardtack I - Umbrella
Test Date: June 8, 1958
Location: Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands
Yield: 8 kilotons of TNT
Explosion Depth: 150 meters underwater
“The ’Umbrella’ test aimed to study the effects of an underwater nuclear explosion on naval ships and the surrounding marine environment. Scientists and military experts wanted to understand how shock waves propagated through water, how radiation dispersed, and the structural impact on vessels nearby.“
