Navajo Word of the Day: “Késhmish biniiyé na’iiniih” (Christmas Bazaar)
In this video,I share how to say Christmas Bazaar in the Navajo language: Késhmish biniiyé na’iiniih
Noun breakdown:
Késhmish - Christmas
Biniiyé - For that reason
Na’iiniih - Something unmentioned is being sold
To use it in a sentence, you can say:
Díísh jí̜ Diné Collegedi Késhmish biniiyé na’iiniih baa na’aldeeh.
There is a Christmas Bazaar going on today at Diné College.
The glottal stop in the word na’iiniih is very important. It tells us that this word is an intransitive verb. You’re saying something is being bought but you’re not saying what the item being purchased is.
For example, when you say, “Shimá baa na’iiniih,“ you’re saying, “He/she is buying something from my mom.”
You can’t say, “Shimá ’ootseed baa na’iiniih,” for, “He/she is buying jewelry from my mom.” This is grammatically incorrect.
If you’re specifying the item you’re selling, you have to use a transitive verb. For example, when you say, “My mom is selling jewelry,“ you say, “Shimá ’ootseed baa nahaniih. He/she is buying jewelry from my mom.“ Baa nahaniih is a transitive verb. You have to use this with the noun you are purchasing.
’Ootseed in Navajo means metal work. It describes something that is made from pounded or metal molded by a hammer. You can use it collectively for earrings, bracelets, rings, etc. For this reason, I translate it to mean jewelry but ’ootseed is preferally translated to mean metal-work.
Now, I didn’t mention this in my video because I was told by my mom to leave this information out. You can technically say, “Shimá baa nahaniih,” if you know my mom & know she sells jewelry. If you don’t know her, saying, “Shimá baa nahaniih,” is slang for, “She bootlegs.” If you know what is being sold, you can say, “…baa nahaniih,” without the object, but it is slang for, “She is bootlegging.“ So be careful when you say this.
I hope you enjoyed this video. I wish you a Merry Christmas! Nizhónígo Késhmish ’adííłeeł (Merry Christmas)!
